On shoots involving multiple cameras, syncing the shots in post can often be difficult. Usually you attempt to match timecode signals or shoot a common slate so that your editor can match action or overlay master dialogue audio without having to read lips or scrub through frame by frame. However, sometimes due to logistical issues the neccessary steps are not taken in the field to save your editor a headache in post. Thankfully, a new program from Singular Software called "Plural Eyes," can make it easier.
Moving Picture recently took on a complicated edit for a documentary that required multiple cameras in a run-and-gun atmosphere. Not only was it impossible to shoot a common slate, but because two of the cameras were Canon Digital SLR's, common timecode could not be jammed. The atmosphere was such that the camera operators needed to move freely throughout a crowd and could not even be attached to a sound man, who was recording audio from multiple wireless body-pack mics and a boom.
In post, the editor had hundreds of digital clips from a 5D and a 7D, several tapes from a tape based HD video camera (Panasonic AJ-HDX900), and several master audio clips from a soundman using a 744t audio recorder including multiple lavs and a boom on separate tracks.
With minimal effort, Plural Eyes scanned the audio recorded from the individual cameras' on-board mics, as well as the master audio clips from the soundmixer's recording, and using the common characteristics from all of these sources, distributed each shot and audio clip across the timeline in proper order, overlapping where sync was found.
4 Easy Steps:
1. Save The Project.
2. Create a sequence called "pluraleyes."
3. Add clips to the sequence.
4. Start PluralEyes and choose "Sync."
The tutorial below shows just how easy using Plural Eyes can be.
